Ann McDonald  ARPS DPAGB

Serendipity plays a part in many photographic careers. Like so many Ann was a family / holiday shooter until joining her first club – Chichester CC – in 2002. The timing was key as a number of other very talented photographers joined at around the same time – making Chichester the strong club it is today.

Ann is primarily a printer and submitted a successful Associateship panel to the RPS just two years after joining Chichester. She has had great success within the club winning many of the annual and exhibition trophies and has been their ‘Photographer of the Year’ on three occasions and has also won the trophy for services to the club.

Ann was an ‘early adopter’ of digital moving from slides shortly after joining the club. She was the co-founder and co-leader of the Digital Group for many years and now runs the PAGB distinctions sub group.

She had a memorable term as Chairman guiding the club from strength to strength and combined this with putting together a successful lottery application.

Ann has had great success on the international circuit, often winning awards. On one recent occasion she and fellow club member Rosie Armes took two of the top PSA Gold Medals at the Smethwick Exhibition.

Not content with the international circuit, Ann is one of several Chichester members who have submitted prints to the London Salon for a number of years. In 2012 she was very humbled to receive a London Salon medal – no mean feat. In the same year she was added to the Southern Federation’s ‘Roll of Honour’ for services to photography.

Ann is greatly looking forward to being on the other side of the fence and selecting prints and digital images in the company of Leigh Preston and Peter Paterson.

  

Peter Paterson  FRPS EFIAP MPAGB

Peter has been taking photographs for over 50 years starting mostly in monochrome which he processed in the darkroom. During this time he has gained a Fellowship from the Royal Photographic Society, the EFIAP award and a Masters from the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (MPAGB).

His main subject interests are landscape, still life and abstract, both in colour and mono using Nikon digital cameras. Peter exhibits his photographs nationally and internationally in various photographic salons around the world. He has also had photographs published in Digital Photo Magazine, Photography Monthly, Digital SLR Photography, FPME, Creative Monochrome Yearbook (Best of Friends), Guide to Great Photography, The AA Landscape Photographer of the Year Book collection 01and 02 also The Essential Guide to Landscape Photography.

He gets great pleasure from sharing his photo technique with others through his talks to camera clubs and societies and he currently serves on the Visual Art A&F Distinction Panel of the RPS.

  

Leigh Preston  FRPS EFIAP MPAGB

Leigh Preston's first tentative steps in photography started at school, where he quickly learned darkroom work, creating black and white prints of pictures taken of school friends using his father's Kodak Retinette 1B. Besides using FP3 for mono work, he began taking colour slides when working at the Munich Olympic Games in 1972. Painting and drawing provided the composition and design skills that formed a foundation for Leigh's photographs. Influences were L.S. Lowry, Atkinson Grimshaw and Bill Brandt, but also the environment that surrounded him.

In 1977 Leigh bought a second-hand Canon Ftb, joined the Ordnance Survey Photographic Society in Southampton and started travelling the usual route of a skilled camera club member. Club competitions, exhibitions and distinctions, magazine articles, photography year books and his own portfolio book followed. He joined the RPS distinctions panels, on which he sat for over 20 years, and also became a member of Arena and the London Salon.

After leaving Southampton, Leigh moved to Gloucestershire and became heavily involved with the Midlands Photographic Federation. He also joined Solihull Photographic Society, which he felt moved him further along the road in terms of output, and a wider involvement in the PAGB.

Leigh's working life was as a cartographer and more recently in education. He has plenty of other interests and pastimes - travel, hill walking, music, long distance running and industrial archaeology. After 40 years at it, he's still a working photographer, both commercially and for his own satisfaction. There is still time put aside for printing in the darkroom, although most of his output is digital now.

Photography has taken Leigh to places around the world he never thought he would have chances to see. Taking pictures has been his chosen form of expression. That said, he has found the current styles in photography more geared towards photo art and digital processes and less satisfying. Leigh has recently self-published another book of work taken in Georgia, France and Scotland.

  

Liz Cutting  ARPS DPAGB

Liz is a keen naturalist and passionate wildlife photographer. She both works part time for, and volunteers in, the conservation sector. Previously Liz’s photography concentrated on landscapes and environmental portraiture, all printed in monochrome in her dark-room. Friends thought she had a strange penchant for bits of wood. Liz’s ARPS was achieved with a panel of birds, all taken within an hour or so’s drive of her home and her DPAGB was achieved with a mix of nature, landscape and travel images.

Liz has served on Council of Suffolk Naturalists Society and has supplied images for use by The RSPB, BTO, The Hawk & Owl Trust and Suffolk Ornithology Group. She enjoys giving talks to Camera Clubs and to a variety of wildlife and conservation groups. Liz is a founder member of the Beyond Group.

  

Barry Mead  FRPS EFIAP/p MPAGB

Barry’s involvement with photography has been extensive since the mid-1970s. He has had numerous one-man exhibitions including The Royal Photographic Society in 1990 and the Dublin Photographic Centre in 1991.As a PAGB judge Barry has selected for many international salons, as well as for the PAGB Awards. In 1991 he was awarded the RPS Fenton Medal and Honorary Membership of the RPS.

His work ranges from wildlife, landscape to very creative computer constructed images. His regular success in international salons is with the three main types of work he produces; a majority of the awards gained are for wildlife work and creative images. Most of his wildlife work is African/Falklands and Florida, some UK and the creative works have a strong sci-fi/fantasy influence. He is a regular on the club lecture circuit. Barry is involved with photography full-time, represented by a major image library as well as his own website.

  

Maurice Pugh 

Maurice has a passion for Natural History and combines it with Photography to make both enjoyable hobbies. He has been an active member of Southampton Camera Club since joining in 1994 and has been their External Competition Secretary for the past 15 years. He has been associated with the running of the Southampton International Exhibition since 1995 when he first assisted in the Slide Sections and became Slide Secretary for the Exhibition shortly afterwards. Although slides have been phased out in preference to the ever popular Digital Projected Images he has had a role in the running of this Exhibition for the last nineteen years and had been a long-standing member of its Committee.

He has gained numerous awards in competitions, both at Federation and International level, with his highest award being a PSA silver medal for “Best Natural History Slide” in the Bristol International Salon. This image then featured on the front cover of their Salon catalogue.

In 1997 he was “Photographer of the Year” with Photo Answers magazine with an image of the interior of Salisbury Cathedral using a fish-eye lens.

Natural History has always been and still is his main interest, but he enjoys all aspects of photography, especially landscape and the creative aspects of the digital age. His talks to camera clubs are illustrated with projected digital images covering a wide range of natural history subjects.

Having spent nineteen years behind the scenes at the Southampton International, watching images being judged, it was a privilege to accept the Chairman’s invitation to judge the Nature and Photo Travel Sections. Retirement from the Southampton International Committee brings its rewards!
